Illegal mining operation leads to six arrests

The firearm seized by police during an arrest in Grootvlei, last Thursday.

Springs police held a successful operation to curb illegal mining at Grootvlei Proprietary Mines, last Thursday, arresting six illegal immigrants, aged between 22 and 44.

Capt Johannes Ramphora, Springs police spokesman, says they searched a man at the hostel and found an unlicensed firearm in his pocket.

“He was also found in possession of ammunition and was arrested,” says Ramphora.

Phendukas, shovels, a generator and buckets used for illegal mining were also confiscated.

The suspects will appear in court soon.
