Rhino activist in action

Tracy King and Lex Abnett at the shopping centre where the petitions for the fight for rhinos were signed.

Alex claims she has recently exposed a very serious initiative regarding so-called exporting of rhinos to Australia as an “investment” just in case the government allows or the extinction of rhino.

“It was directly through this discovery that I decided that enough was enough, and to start getting South Africans to fight back against the demand for our rhino horn,” she says.

Her vision for the future of SA’s wildlife that is being allowed to decline and brought to the brink of extinction is clear through the Southern African Fight for Rhino (SAFFR) project.

Behind the scenes Lex has been working hard on coordinating a school learners walk countrywide.

“I have already written to 21 schools in Springs alone and close to 200 schools in the Pretoria and Brits area to plead that they join the African Unity Learners Walk for Rhino,” she says.

“Obviously, I cannot find a venue, until these schools reply to the invitation.

I am now on to Durban then Port Elizabeth, and East London.”

She claims she needs more volunteers on the ground to help with petition signing across the East Rand, and hopes the local media will come on board and call for action.

“Help is desperately needed, as I cannot be everywhere at once.”

This project is not a fundraising initiative for SAFFR.

“We are a movement, and do not want money. “In fact we are telling the schools to use this opportunity, to raise funds for their own schools,” says Alex.

She says all SAFFR wants is to be allowed, with their own volunteers, to get adults to sign the petition.

“I am pleading with all shopping centres, to please allow us onto their premises, to get signatures on the petition that will stop the poaching and buy our rhino more time,” says Lex.

Our rhino depend on us uniting as one voice to save them.
