Persida reservoir tender process begins

Construction work to build the new 7.5-megalitre reservoir next to the old reservoir in Persida will start soon. Contract workers were almost finished with the installation of the pipeline next to the reservoir in Persida when this photo was taken.

Three Springs suburbs are only a year away from getting a new reservoir, but it has been a long process.

The installation of water pipelines between Bakerton and Persida was completed in February.

After excavation started in July 2014, contractors dug a trench with a diameter of 500m x300m along Welgedacht Road between Bakerton and Persida.

The 10km of 500mm-diameter piping was then installed.

Metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe says the old water pipe was replaced with a high-density polyethylene pipe.

The lifespan of this pipe is 100 years.

In May 2016, the metro reported phase two was planned for the 2017/18 financial year and construction of the new reservoir, the design of which has been completed, was due to commence in 2018.

A new 7.5-megalitre reservoir will be built next to the old reservoir in Stoffberg Street, Persida.

Gadebe says designs and tender documents have been completed and will be submitted for approval to the Bid Specification Committee by the end of July.

The project will take 12 months to complete.

“The installation of a 10km parallel bulk main from Rand Water will complement the new reservoir,” says Gadebe.
