Illegal shacks erected in Everest Informal Settlement overnight

Illegal shacks erected at Everest Informal Settlement in Welgedacht Road.

More than 20 illegal shacks were erected at Everest Informal Settlement in Welgedacht Road on Monday.

The land invasion comes after an alleged dispute between the shack owners and their landlords in Bakerton.

EMPD spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng says their First Responder Unit was called out to a complaint about illegal dwellers who had occupied vacant land next to a mine dump.

“Interviews about the origin of the land invaders were conducted, which revealed they were recently evicted by their landlords in Bakerton before the invasion,” he says.

Talks will continue between different municipal stakeholders, including the human settlements department, for an amicable solution to be reached so that the land invaders can be attended to.

“We are closely monitoring the area until the next course of action is decided upon,” says Mokheseng.
