Copper cables and cash stolen by suspects pretending to be police

A man was sleeping in his shack in Daggafontein Informal Settlement when ‘police’ knocked on his door and robbed him on Saturday at around 5am.

“The complainant was woken up by a knock on his door early in the morning by people who said they are from the police,” says Amanda Greybe, spokesperson for the Springs Police.

He allegedly did not want to open the door, when the unknown men kicked the door.

The complainant then opened the door and saw four suspects, who were not police officers, armed with sticks.

“The suspects allegedly demanded copper cables that were in the complainants possession,” she says.

The complainant managed to run out of the house, leaving the suspects there, and jumped into his uncle’s yard for help.

On their return to the complainant’s house, they saw the suspects walking away with a wheelie bin filled with copper cables.

“The suspects also allegedly took cash from underneath the complainant’s bed.”

When the police arrived to take fingerprints, they received a tip-off from a community member on where the alleged stolen property may be.

“The police headed to a scrapyard in Struisbult where they discovered the suspected stolen property,” says Greybe.

One suspect was arrested at the property for possession of suspected stolen property.
