Springs Girls’ announced as a MPC Schools Challenge finalist

The South African Reserve Bank (SARB), in partnership with the Department of Basic Education (DBE), announced the winners of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) Schools Challenge for 2018 last Friday.

The MPC Schools Challenge is one of the ways in which the SARB teaches learners how the MPC sets the repurchase (repo) rate.

The programme offers learners an opportunity to grow their understanding of monetary policies and helps them understand how the economy works.

There is an exercise that helps learners put their economics theoretical knowledge into practice. This also assists with their grades.

It aims to increase the level of interest in economics as a subject of choice among high school learners and encourages learners to pursue a career in economics.

The MPC Schools Challenge is only open to public schools and requires that learners take a combination of economics and pure mathematics as subjects.

The challenge is the SARB’s contribution towards improving young South Africans’ understanding of how the economy works and ensuring the economic well-being of all South Africans.

Krugersdorp High School took top honours as the winner of the 2018 MPC Schools Challenge. Potchefstroom Gimnasium came in second place.

Springs Girls’ High School and Orhovelani High School were placed joint third.

Prizes included money for the school and a Nelson Mandela commemorative coin for each learner. The learners and educator who placed first also received iPads.

The SARB says, “The MPC Schools Challenge activities start in the beginning of the year (January to March) in the form of educators and learners briefings, which take place in all the nine provinces. The briefing is to inform participants on what the challenge entails.”

It adds,“The MPC Schools challenge is hosted and sponsored by the South African Reserve Bank. It is part of the bank’s corporate social investments.”
