MMA fighter wants to open a gym for gender-based violence victims
Smanga Nkazimulo Zulu wants to share his fighting skills with the most vulnerable.
Born and raised in Newcastle, MMA fighter Smanga Nkazimulo Zulu is an ambitious sportsman who is recognised in EFC.
Not only is he a fighter, but he is looking forward to a new venture and opening a new MMA gym in Springs.
As a child, Zulu’s first contact sport was karate and he loved watching karate movies. His passion and love grew and he ended up in extreme sports.
“My parents were unsettled by the fact that I partake in extreme fighting. Of course, EFC is seen as a dangerous sport but as athletes, we go through years and months of training before we become what people see on television. Once my late father saw what a beast I was in the hexagon, he fell in love with the sport,” said Zulu.
Before he became a professional fighter, Zulu was a mechanic. Now he would not trade anything for fighting.
The Zulu warrior confidently said his journey is about to begin again and people must watch this space.

“My last fight was on May 7. I was fighting like I was fighting for my life. I enjoyed it even though it was a draw, but believe I won the fight,” he said.
He said the plan is to open gyms in most community halls with the support of neighbours, which will allow for self-defence skills and easy access to all.
“Currently, their eye is on Springs Old Boys in Pollak Park. Unfortunately, they are finding it hard to track down the new owner.
“When myself and my partner first had the conversation, I thought of gender-based violence. I dislike reading or hearing about violence against children and women. I believe I have skills to share – skills which I learned during the many years of my career.
“I want to help each individual to protect themselves from sick individuals that think they can do as they please. Our gym is based on self-defence classes, incorporated with fitness and wellness,” he said.

His biggest wish is to see women and children living without fear of being kidnapped or raped. He wants to train them on how to protect themselves and flee from troublesome situations.
“My dream is to restore safety in our country. It’s a big statement but what is a better tomorrow if it is not promised to be a good, one without fear,” said Zulu.
Being the best at what he does and also representing his country on bigger stages like EFC or One championship are his biggest achievements.
