The Paper You Deserve
In 1952, the Springs Advertiser published an article ‘Our Role’ outlining the paper’s purpose and mission within the community.
Sixty-four years later this mission still applies, although our offerings have expanded with the addition of our website and social media presence which, rather than changing our mission, expands it.
The role of the paper, as set out more than half a century ago, reads:
“Week in and week out, 52 times a year, the local newspaper comes to every home in the town with unfailing regularity.
People look forward to its appearance to see what has happened in the town during the week, to read of coming events and to keep themselves informed of the various aspects of the town’s activities. A Friday without the local paper being produced would be an impossibility – it is just taken for granted and the secret of any paper’s popularity lies in the fact that it “just belongs”.
The role of a country newspaper should be essentially local.
It must serve the local community in every possible way.
A paper such as the Springs Advertiser must remain faithful to the local residents.
Springs is served by the daily newspapers and the function of the Advertiser therefore to concentrate on the local aspect.
There lies the essential difference between a local paper and the national Press. We must perforce be interested in presenting to our readers the happenings of the town and what may be treated as a minor incident in a daily paper, once it has occurred in Springs, may become front-page news for us.
It has been our endeavour to promote the welfare of the majority of the residents of the town without taking personal preference or prejudices into consideration. Every town has the newspaper it deserves.
A progressive town like Springs needs a progressive paper – a need the Advertiser fulfils.” While we do not publish a printed newspaper 52 weeks of the year, you can now keep abreast of the town’s activities 365 days of the year on our website which carries all the news from the newspaper and more.
The addition of a website to our offerings means that all Springsites – whether they still reside here or not – are able to read the news straight out of Springs as it happens.
Many changes have taken place over the last 100 years – from the manner in which the paper is produced to the frequency of our news offerings – but the Advertiser essentially has the same goal – to keep you, our loyal readers, informed and entertained.
